A hilarious tale about the unlikeliest of heroes: a group of competitors for whom a spelling bee is the one place where they can stand out and fit in at the same time.

Crandall Publishing is a small company in State College with one major publication, “Shadows of War: Prelude to the First Memorial Day”. The author, Janice McElhoe has also written “Sarah’s Story” and it is in it’s second edition at the Boalsburg Heritage Museum.
“Shadows of War” is a middle grade historical novel that describes the events in one small northern village, Boalsburg, Pennsylvania, that culminated when two young girls observed the first Memorial Day. The book has been reviewed by the State College Area School District Curriculum Committee and added to the fifth grade study of Pennsylvania history. Mifflin County School District has added it to their eighth grade history class.
